| Who is Paying America's Tax Burden? How much of America's total tax burden do the rich really pay? Well, according to the most recent numbers available from the Internal Revenue Service, those from 2001, their percentage is up from years prior. The top 1% of wage earners, those with incomes of $291,000 and above, pay nearly 34% of the nation's total tax burden. The top 5% of income earners pay over 1/2 of the nation's total tax burden. It takes nearly $128,000 to break into that group. The top 10% of wage earners pay nearly two-thirds (64.9%) of all taxes paid. It takes a yearly income of around $92,000 to crack that group. Lastly, we thought you might be interested to know the bottom 50% wage earners pays. That group, with over 64 million taxpayers, covers less than 4% of America's tax total tax burden.
