After forty years in the transportation business, Terrance, a longtime
client of ours, was ready to sell the company and retire. His goals
in the sale were typical of most business owners. However, Terrance
had one unique aspiration: as part of the sale, he wanted to establish
a foundation that would help fund college scholarships for children living
is economically depressed communities. Terrance himself had been
raised in the inner-city and only with the help of a grant from a local
charity was he able to graduate from college. With the establishment of
his foundation, Terrance was able to make good on a 30 year-old promise
to help youngsters growing up in circumstances like his.
Our firm helped Terrance form his foundation, build its leadership team and
craft its by-laws. Also, we helped the foundation board create a set of
management policies to ensure that every dollar was utilized to the fullest.
A decade later, the foundation helps nearly 90 children each year to enroll
in some of the best private schools in the area. Also, the foundation's
success has attracted outside funding to the point where almost half of the
annual funding of the foundation comes from sources other than Terrance's original
endowment.
